Let’s be real—there’s nothing quite like a beach photoshoot, especially here on Oahu. The crashing waves, golden light, salty breeze, and soft sand under your feet—it’s a literal dream backdrop. But! While it might look effortless in the final images, there are a few insider tips that can make a huge difference between a "meh" shoot and an epic, magazine-worthy one.
Whether you’re planning your shoot while vacationing on Oahu or you're lucky enough to call this island home, these beach photoshoot tips will help you prep for the most stunning experience—whether you’re planning it yourself or prepping for one with your favorite photographer (hi 👋).

1. TIMING IS EVERYTHING :
Best Time of Day for a Beach Photoshoot on oahu
Golden hour is queen. That dreamy, soft, glowy light you see in all those Pinterest-worthy shots? That’s usually shot within an hour after sunrise or before sunset. Not only does the lighting flatter everyone, but it also adds that magical vibe that just hits different on Oahu’s shores.
🌅 Pro tip:Sunrise shoots are super underrated—especially on the east side (Lanikai, Waimanalo, etc.). The beaches are far more emptier than sunset time, there's typically less traffic to deal with, the light is soft and ethereal, the most EPIC lighting (SUNRISE) happens at the beginning of your shoot - so you're fresh as a daisy, and there’s something so peaceful about starting your day with a barefoot adventure. Also, if you're visiting me in Hawaii, the time difference will make it super easy to wake up for sunrise!
2. Keep Your Outfits Beach-Friendly :
Outfits That Work for Beach Photography on oahu
Think flowy fabrics, light colors, and textures that move with the wind. You want outfits that catch the breeze and reflect the laid-back beach vibe. Neutrals, whites, pastels, or even earthy tones work beautifully against the natural ocean blues and sandy tones. & If I'm being honest I just loooooooooooove a pop of color! In Hawaii I always say the colors you see in the flowers around the islands always pops beautifully. This is particularly awesome if you're getting droned and helps you to stand out against the sand or rocks and work beautifully against Oahu's ocean blues and soft sand.
👗 Avoid: Super bright neons, words on your clothing or name brands. Also conflicting patterns are usually a no, no as they tend to clash with the natural setting and can be distracting in photos.
🌊 Bonus: Don’t be afraid to get a little wet! Some of the best beach shots are in the water, at the shoreline, or playing in the waves. So wear something you don’t mind getting a little salty in. I always say the the couple gets more epic as the shoot progresses... the more salty and sandy the better!

3. Embrace the Elements of oahu 🌞 🌧️ 🌈 🌊
ULTIMATE BEACH PHOTOSHOOT TIPS
Wind in your hair? Yes, please. Don't fight it, embrace it! Let it work for you.
Sand between your toes? Let it happen. Wet dress? Own it, twirl in it, dance in it!
The beach has personality, the more you embrace the elements rather than fight them, the more natural and stunning your photos will feel. Trust me—imperfection is part of the magic, especially when shooting at iconic Oahu beaches like Kualoa Beach Park, Yokohama, or our rad secret locations. 🤫
Pro tip: If your shoot is here in Hawaii, or on any island really, don't stress over the weather! We have small bouts of rain that blow in and out all the time, little sun-showers can absolutely add to the magic - so if you see a bit of rain in the forecast, don't worry! Embrace it! Unless there's a major storm that can impact your shoot in which case your photographer, I'm sure will give you a heads up and work with you to reschedule - go with the flow and enjoy!

4. Pack Smart :
What to Bring for a Smooth Beach Photoshoot on oahu
Here’s what I recommend bringing:
A towel (or two)
A change of clothes (especially if we’re ending the shoot in the water)
Hairbrush or comb
Water to keep hydrated + snacks (for the post-shoot reward 😉)
Optional: a blanket or wrap for cozy shots and chill-out time
Sunscreen for those particularly hot days.
Pro tip: Baby powder helps to easily remove sand by absorbing the surrounding moisture.
5. Go Barefoot (or Beach-Appropriate)
Shoes on the beach? Hard pass (unless they’re barefoot sandals or part of a styled look). You’ll look and feel more natural with bare feet. Plus, running or walking in sand with heels, at your favorite oahu spot, is a recipe to get stuck!
7. Opt for a bird's eye view
Juicy drone shots are an absolute MUST to capture your full story. Getting a bird's eye view of the epic spot you're at at that moment in time, helps to fully tell the complete story of your time on the beach. We absolutely LOVE droning our clients as they explore the gorgeus beaches of Hawaii, the epic lava rock coasts, or the white sand beaches and the aqua waters. We've been lucky to capture so much of the incredible wildlife Hawaii has to offer from monk seals, to manta rays, sea turtles, albatross, dolphins, whales, and more - adding drone is an absolute must!

6. Trust the Process
The wind might whip your hair into your mouth, the waves might splash higher than expected, and your kiddo might throw sand in the air like confetti. That’s okay. Honestly, that’s beautiful. Some of my favorite photos come from those unscripted, wild moments.
Let go, have fun, be playful, and trust that we’re capturing not just what it looked like—but how it felt. Let your little one(s) run wild, years from now you'll cherish the shots of them captured naturally in their element and enjoying life. If your shoot is with us we'll guide you into beautiful interactions together, if that hair whips across your face - we'll guide your partner to softly move it and tuck it back behind your ear while looking into your eyes creating a sweet moment between the two of you. While we'll definitely capture some beautiful portraits, those sweet moments are those beautiful story-telling moments that capture the story of you and your loved ones together.
