Thinking about getting Waikiki Family Photography during your trip to Oahu? You’ve come to the right place — not just because we’re obsessed with capturing joyful, candid, gorgeous family moments —But, we actually LIVE in Waikiki!! We've been shooting here for 13 years and have chased light all over this beach, so we know exactly when and where the magic hits.

This guide will walk you through everything you need to know about planning a Waikiki family photo session — from the best time of day to shoot, to weather tips, to what to wear, and how to get those dreamy tropical colors without the stress.

📍 Why Waikiki is a Dream Location for Family Photos

Waikiki Beach is ICONIC for family photography — and for good reason:

  • Views of Diamond Head as your backdrop? Yes, please.

  • A coastline that lights up in golden hues? Absolutely.

  • Palm trees, soft white sand, and electric blue water? Every dang day.

And the best part? It’s walkable. We can move from beach to palm groves to the lagoon area within a few minutes — which gives us tons of variety in a short amount of time (especially key when you’ve got littles in the mix).

Best Time of Day for Waikiki FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHY

Timing truly makes all the difference when it comes to light, color, crowd levels, and the overall vibe of your shoot. Here's the real talk:

🌅 Sunrise Sessions (Our Personal Fave)

  • The sun rises over Diamond Head, giving us the softest, dreamiest lighting

  • It’s cool, peaceful, and the beach is practically empty except for a few early risers and joggers

  • Sand is usually freshly combed (they bring out a tractor!), giving us the cleanest backdrop

  • The ocean has softer tones — think gentle blues and sweet pink skies

  • Kids (and parents!) are usually fresh and energized

  • No stress of racing the sun — we start the session with the best light and ease into it

🌇 Sunset Sessions

  • The sun sets over the water in Waikiki — perfect for golden, glowy, backlit moments

  • But just a heads-up: the beach is much busier at this time

  • Expect lots of people, especially near Hilton Hawaiian Village

  • And on Fridays, it’s next-level crowded due to the fireworks shot off from the beach just after sunset

🔥 Pro Tip: We don’t recommend Fridays or weekends for sessions if you can avoid it. Fridays = fireworks chaos, blocked beach areas, and zero parking. Weekends = way more crowds and less flexibility to shoot freely.

💙 Want That Bright Turquoise Ocean? Here's the Trick

If you’re after those vibrant aqua-and-teal water shots, a few hours after sunrise is your sweet spot. That’s when the sun is higher in the sky and really lights up the water in those tropical tones. BUT…

☀️ Full midday sun isn’t always our friend:

  • It’s hotter, and the light is harsher

  • Faces can get super shadowy or blown out

  • Sensitive eyes (especially kiddos) might squint a lot

  • And yep — sunburns can sneak in quick

So while we can make midday work if needed, we usually recommend early morning or that post-sunrise window to find the balance between flattering light and that iconic island color pop.

🌦️ Let’s Talk Weather

(Don't stress it)

We get asked about weather all the time — and here’s the truth:

We don’t watch weather apps. Seriously.

On Oahu, light rain showers are super common — and they usually blow in and out quickly. A 20% chance of rain doesn’t mean your shoot is doomed. It often means we might get a few refreshing drops and then… a rainbow. 🌈 (And yes, some of our favorite images have happened in those in-between moments.)

DO NOT stress the weather app — it often makes it seem worse than it is, and it can’t account for microclimates or fast-moving island clouds.

Now, if a huge dark cloud is covering the whole island (which is rare but can happen), and there’s truly no way around it — we’ll be in touch and help you reschedule for a better window. But unless that’s the case, we roll with it and usually end up with magic.

What to Bring (and What to Leave Behind)

Keep it light! The less stuff we’re hauling, the more free we are to move around and grab all the spontaneous, joyful, real-life moments.

BRING:

  • A small water bottle (especially for mid-day or longer shoots)

  • Light snack for the kiddos (if you think it will be necessary -grapes or gummies, not messy!)

LEAVE:

  • Bulky bags or coolers — we’ll likely be walking a bit

  • Big props — we focus on you, not your stuff

  • Anything that slows you down — freedom = more photo magic

What to Wear for Waikiki Family PhotoGRAPHY (And How to Rock It)

(Outfits That Look Amazing Now — and Stay Beautiful for Years)

When it comes to planning your Waikiki family photography session, what you wear plays a big role in how your photos feel. The right outfits set the tone, elevate your images, and make sure your photos look just as stunning 10 or 20 years from now as they do today.

And that’s the goal, right? This isn’t just a vacation — it’s your family’s memories, frozen in time. You deserve to love these images forever.

That’s why we always encourage families to choose looks that are timeless, comfortable, and photograph beautifully against the tropical backdrop of Waikiki Beach.

Whether you’re into bold Hawaiian colors, modern coastal style, or a soft neutral vibe — we’ve got you covered.

🎨 Want a Bold, Tropical Pop? YES PLEASE.

If you’re vibing with the colors of Hawaii — the reds, burnt oranges, marigolds or saffrons, jungle greens — we LOVE a good color pop!

  • Think flowy dresses in rich earth tones, warm reds, sunset hues, or even a bold print (especially on one family member as a statement)

  • These colors sing against the ocean and greenery and make your photos feel vibrant and full of life

  • Just aim for color harmony — not everyone needs to match, but let it feel intentional

Jenna Lee's Fav Colors are those you'll find in the sunsets/sunrises, or flowers around the Hawaiian islands.

🤍 Craving a Clean, Classic Look?

You can never go wrong with:

  • Soft neutrals like ivory, tan, sage, denim, and dusty pink

  • Light, breathable fabrics like cotton, linen, gauze

  • Everyone coordinated but not too matchy-matchy

  • No logos or stiff shirts — keep it comfy, keep it YOU

Bonus: This style photographs beautifully in both sunrise and sunset lighting.

🌊 Want to Look On Trend Without Trying Too Hard?

Let’s talk 2025 style: effortless, cool, and a little editorial.

Think coastal cowgirl meets Euro summer — natural textures, oversized shirts, matching sets, breezy linen pants, or flowy skirts with cropped tanks.

Go for modern color combos like stone + olive, cream + rust, or soft blue + butter yellow. Muted tones are having a moment.

Accessorize with what’s in: wide-brim hats, dad caps, chunky sandals, layered jewelry, or even a beachy claw clip moment for the girls.

This look screams stylish-without-trying and works amazing for both parents and kids.

✨ Permitted Photography Areas in Waikiki

Waikiki beaches are public, but some areas do have restrictions for commercial photography. We always make sure to shoot in permit-approved areas, which include spots like:

  • Duke Kahanamoku Beach

  • The Hilton Lagoon

  • Sections along the beach near Fort DeRussy

✅ Don’t worry — we handle the permit side of things so your session is legal, stress-free, and good to go.

💛 What Our Waikiki Sessions Feel Like

Easy. Fun. Not overly posed.

We’ll laugh, explore, maybe splash, definitely chase the kids a little, and capture the kind of joy that makes a photo frame-worthy. Even if someone’s shy, wild, sandy, or has sunscreen on their nose — we make it work. And we promise to keep it playful the whole time.
